In the fall and early winter of – Melville had journeyed to England and the Continent, nominally to arrange favorable terms for the publication of White-Jacket but also to indulge in an abbreviated version of the Grand Tour he had never taken. Anchored off Dover and about to “press English earth after the lapse of ten years,” he was awed and amused by his changed status since his last visit— “then a sailor, now H. M. author of ‘Peedee,’ ‘Hullabaloo,’ and ‘Pog-Dog’” (WHM :). Without the requisite letters of introduction, Melville was unable to meet the leading authors of his time as the young Emerson had done years earlier, but he could at least purchase books, among them the plays of Marlowe, Jonson, and Beaumont and Fletcher, Boswell’s Life of Johnson, Rousseau’s Confessions, Goethe’s Autobiography, Romantic writings by Lamb, De Quincey, Mme de Stäel, and Mary Shelley, and the narrative of a Revolutionary War veteran reduced to paupery in England, which would later provide the basis for Israel Potter.
